In Fifth and Sixth Grade Social Studies, we will travel to distant times and places. While the fifth-graders will start off the year studying the foundations of geography, we will all eventually travel from the earliest human ancestors of the African savannah, the start of civilization in the Fertile Crescent, along the Nile past the great pyramids, through the mystical world of Greek mythology, and into the Roman Forum. All the while, we will try to understand what our ancient relatives are trying to tell us about our world...and ourselves.
My goal is to convince you that understanding the many aspects of history are important and fun. It is my belief that students learn best when they are given freedom to be creative. Therefore, you will be given many opportunities to be! Possibilities include creating board games and travel brochures, designing newscast videos, performing skits, creating and delivering presentations, writing music or even becoming amateur archaeologists. All the while, you will be learning how to become mature, inquisitive, organized students. Indeed, research, critical thinking and writing are the backbones of all of our courses... but the first thing you will learn is that learning itself can be pretty awesome!
